Planning Paintings with Thumbnail Sketches, Tonal Value and Color Studies - Intermediate
-

Paint Along with me Video - In this class you can see how to prepare for painting by making some thumbnails to decide the format, tonal studies to decide the lights and darks, then a color study to translate the tonal studies into the colors you would like to see in your painting. It is so much easier to try all of this out in a small scale so that when you paint the larger, final painting you will know exactly where you are going.

This video links to Page 131 in my Watercolor Book, from Wet to Dry and Everything In Between.

In this primer you will see how to make larger sized paintings from your 5"x 7" studies. It is very important to make the larger painting in the same proportion as the smaller study and in this video you will see how to do that. After you make the larger proportion correct, you will see how to scale up your drawing with a grid.
